Walking in for your first massage in San Diego is simpler than it sounds. At Pink One Spa, you walk into 688 Hollister St #D, tell us if you want 30 minutes ($40) or 60 minutes ($60), and we lead you to a private room. You undress to your comfort level, lie under a clean sheet, and your therapist works through tension at the pressure you ask for. About a third of our walk-in guests are first-timers. Total visit time is around 40 to 75 minutes including check-in, the session, and changing afterward.
If you have never had a professional massage, the unknown can feel awkward — what do you wear, what do you say, where exactly do you put your phone. None of those questions are silly, and every massage spa worth visiting will walk you through them without making you feel new. This guide covers exactly what happens at Pink One Spa from the moment you walk through the door until you walk out feeling looser than you did an hour ago. About a third of our walk-in guests in any given week are first-timers, so you are in plenty of company.
Walking in and choosing your session
Pink One Spa is a walk-in spa, which means no booking, no online form, no waiting list. You walk into 688 Hollister St #D between 9:30 AM and 11:30 PM and we take you in the order you arrive. Most weekdays the wait is under 5 minutes; Friday and Saturday evenings can stretch to 10-15 minutes during the busiest windows. At the front desk, you tell us two things: how long you want (30 minutes for $40 or 60 minutes for $60) and what you want to focus on. 'Whole body relaxation,' 'tight neck and shoulders,' or 'lower back stiffness' is enough information — we do not need a medical history or detailed paperwork. If you have any health condition that affects soft tissue (recent surgery, blood-thinners, pregnancy), mention it now so your therapist can adjust accordingly. Pricing is posted at the front and stays the same every visit — there is no membership pitch, no contract pressure, and no upsell at checkout.
One small thing first-timers often ask: should I take off my watch, jewelry, or contact lenses before the session? Watches and jewelry — yes, take them off and put them in your room with your clothes. They can press uncomfortably during the session or get in the way of certain strokes. Contact lenses — leave them in unless you specifically wear them only outside the house. The face cradle has a comfortable cushion that supports your forehead and cheeks without pressing on your eyes, so contacts will not be an issue. Phones can be left silent in your clothing pile or in your bag — there is no need to hand them over to anyone.
In the private room — what to wear
Your therapist leads you to one of our private rooms, points out where to put your clothes and small items, and steps out so you can undress. You undress to your comfort level — most people leave underwear on, but some prefer fully covered or fully undressed. You will be under a clean sheet for the entire session except the area being worked on, which gets uncovered briefly and re-covered immediately. This is called proper draping and it is non-negotiable at any professional massage spa. You lie face-down to start (the table has a face cradle so you can breathe normally), with your forehead resting in the cushioned ring. Your therapist knocks before re-entering, then begins working. The room has soft lighting, calming music, and a comfortable temperature. Soft, loose clothing is easiest to slip back on after the session. There is no dress code for arriving — walk in straight from work, the gym, errands, or a date.
Two specifics about the room itself that surprise first-timers. First, the temperature is set warmer than you might expect — usually 72-76°F. This is intentional; you cool down faster than usual when you are still and undressed under a sheet. If you feel cold at any point, tell your therapist and they will add a blanket. Second, the music is soft instrumental — usually piano, light strings, or ambient nature sounds. If the music is distracting (some people find any music distracting in a quiet space), tell your therapist and they will turn it down or off. The room is yours from the moment your therapist closes the door, and small adjustments are normal.
During the session — pressure, talking, and what's normal
Your therapist starts at your back, working through the larger muscle groups first to warm up the tissue. Pressure builds gradually — they will check in with you within the first 5 minutes and again a few times throughout. The two most useful sentences during any massage are 'a little firmer please' and 'lighter please.' Say them as often as you need. Adjusting pressure does not slow the session or change the price. Some people prefer to chat softly; most prefer to be quiet so they can fully switch off. Either is fine — say 'I'd like to relax quietly' at the start if you want silence, and your therapist will respect that. Roughly halfway through, you will be asked to flip over so the front of your body can be worked. Your therapist holds the sheet up while you turn, so you stay covered the whole time. The session ends with light strokes and a soft squeeze of the shoulders. You lie still for 30-60 seconds while your therapist steps out to let you get dressed.
About halfway through, when you are asked to flip over, your therapist will hold the top sheet up like a curtain at chest height while you turn under it. You do not need to coordinate the timing — they hold, you turn, they lower the sheet back. The whole movement takes about 5 seconds and you stay covered the entire time. Some first-timers tense up about this transition; there is genuinely no need. The face cradle then folds down or flips out of the way for the front-side work. Your therapist may put a small bolster under your knees for back support, which feels surprisingly nice and reduces lower back strain.
After the session — paying, tipping, and going home
Get dressed, gather your things, and head to the front desk. Payment is straightforward: cash, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, debit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Tipping is entirely voluntary and never expected at Pink One Spa — it is fully at your discretion. There is no set rule and no minimum. The front desk will not bring it up. Walk out, drink a glass of water, and take it easy for the next hour or two. You might feel slightly drowsy or floaty (totally normal) or noticeably looser in your tight spots. Some people feel mild next-day soreness if pressure was firm — similar to a good workout — and it resolves within 24-48 hours. If you booked 30 minutes and decide you want more after, just ask at the desk; we may be able to extend if a room is open. Total visit time including check-in, session, and changing: around 40 minutes for a 30 minute session, or around 75 minutes for a 60 minute session. Have any other questions about your visit? After your first session, take it easy for the next hour or two. Drink a full glass of water — massage moves fluid through tissue and water helps your body process it. Avoid intense exercise or heavy meals for 90-120 minutes. Some people feel slightly drowsy or floaty (the technical term is 'massage afterglow'); some feel energized and alert. Both are normal responses. If you feel any unusual symptom — sharp pain, dizziness, nausea — call us at (619) 319-1551 or seek medical attention. These are extremely rare but possible, especially if Deep Tissue pressure was too aggressive on a sensitive area.
Most first-timers walk out a little surprised. The thing they were nervous about (undressing, being on a table, the unfamiliarity) turns out to be 5 minutes of mild awkwardness that disappears the moment the session actually starts, while the actual benefit (looser shoulders, slower breathing, calmer mood) lasts the rest of the day and into the next. Many first-timers come back within 2-3 weeks for a second session — once you know what to expect, you stop being nervous and start actually enjoying the hour.
